Jim Cuevas, BA, Community Support Specialist

Jim Cuevas.jpg

Jim serves as a Community Support Specialist in the Lakeland, Florida community and has worked with The Bindu Institute since May of 2022. He received a Bachelor of Art in Recreation Administration from Kean University.

Prior to becoming a CSS, he was a Goal Plan Advisor for RHA Health Services/Salisbury Behavior Health.  He planned and implemented goals for 20 residents who all had mental health disorders.  He is also currently a field throwing coach for people with physical disabilities.

Jim was born in Puerto Rico and mostly raised in New Jersey.  He has a disability called Spina Bifida.  He is an athlete and has competed all around the world in wheelchair track and field.  He enjoys working out in the gym and coaching others in the gym or on the field for field throwing events (i.e., shotput, discus, and javelin).  Outside of sports, his interests include reading, watching TV, playing video games, and writing songs.

Going through the challenges of having a physical disability himself, he has learned how to maneuver in a world that is not made for a person with a disability.  This understanding is unique in that he is able to understand how best to help others in similar situations.  He is a very patient person and is able to go with the flow when things don't go as planned.  Mostly importantly, he has learned to not let his disability get in the way of achieving his goals.
